Duane Allman was a southern rock guitarist famed for his great slide playing and melodic leads in the band of his making, The Allman Brothers. In addition to his famous role in that band, he was a much sought after session guitarist. Eric Clapton remarked that "I remember hearing Wilson Pickett's 'Hey Jude' and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. ... I had to know who that was immediately - right now."

Eric Clapton later brought Duane in to record the famous lead guitar in Layla by Derek and the Dominoes.

He plays early issue Gibsons, usually Les Pauls. A 1957 Goldtop, a 1959 tobacco burst and later an SG were all used by Duane.
