Single Coil Pickups

Most commonly found in Stratocaster or Telecaster guitars, single coil pickups are praised for their clean and bright sound. A common combination is two or three single coils with a pickup selector, allowing you to mix two pickups together for a slightly "bouncier" or "bubbly" sound.

The one problem with single coil pickups is their tendency to create noise. Because of their single coil design, they can pickup up electronic interference that can be unwanted. Humbucker pickups solve this problem by combining two single coils into one pickup that cancel out the noise. Two single coils used in tandem via the 2nd or 4th position of a Stratocaster pickup selector switch can have nearly the same effect.
